Epidemiological studies have recently documented a spike in internalizing and externalizing mental health problems in child and adolescent populations (Bor et al., 2014; Collishaw, 2015). This evidence is in line with existing knowledge that suggests that many symptoms emerge during these crucial years of lifespan development (Blakemore, 2019).
